RSI divergence reversal
Tests whether a mismatch between price and RSI swings adds value after exhaustion.
Keep the chart simple
What needs to be in place first
- Pivot algorithm is fixed
- Price makes a new extreme
- RSI fails by a declared minimum amount
See rsi divergence reversal from both sides
Choose a direction and follow the chart from setup to entry, stop and planned exit. The method stays the same; only the directional comparisons reverse.
Entry is above the trigger, invalidation is below the setup and a profit exit is above the entry.
- EEntryLONG ENTRY — next H4 open
- SStop / risk limitSTOP — beyond second pivot
- TTargetTARGET — fixed 2R
This H4 chart shows regular bullish divergence with two-left/two-right confirmed pivots. Entry follows the later five-bar structural close, the stop is 0.20 ATR(14) below pivot two and the target is fixed at 2R.
NO TRADE while pivot two is unconfirmed, after a new lower low before entry, when pivot spacing is outside 5–30 bars, or after the ten-bar trigger expiry.Check the market first
Bullish: the second price pivot low is at least 0.10 ATR below the first while its RSI is at least 5 points higher; reverse for bearish.
Wait for the entry rule
Enter next bar open after price closes beyond the highest high of the five bars ending at the confirmed second low for bullish divergence; mirror below the five-bar low for bearish divergence.
Place the stop before entry
Stop is 0.20 × ATR(14) beyond the second price pivot. Risk 0.50% of equity and round down to 0.01 lot.
Know how the trade ends
Take profit at 2R. Exit at market after 20 completed H4 bars if neither stop nor target has traded.
Worked example: confirmed regular RSI divergence
This version of RSI divergence reversal chooses one answer for every decision so you can repeat it. Treat the settings as a starting point to test, not as proven or recommended parameters.
EUR/USD and GBP/USD H4 UTC candles; regular bullish and bearish divergence only.
Every pivot requires two bars on each side, so it becomes usable two completed bars late.
Hidden divergence and intrabar RSI values are outside this canonical method.
Add Wilder-style RSI(14) of close and Wilder ATR(14).
A price pivot low is lower than the two lows on each side; a pivot high is higher than the two highs on each side. Record RSI at the pivot bar only after confirmation.
Pair two same-type confirmed pivots separated by 5 to 30 bars; freeze the line once the second pivot is confirmed.
Give every tool one job
Direction, timing, volatility and risk are different questions. This stack assigns them rather than asking one indicator to do everything.
Remove discretionary swing selection and expose the two-bar confirmation delay.
Supplies the matched momentum readings; divergence itself is not the entry.
Normalises minimum price separation, stop buffer and gap cancellation.
- Bullish: the second price pivot low is at least 0.10 ATR below the first while its RSI is at least 5 points higher; reverse for bearish.
- At least one of the paired RSI pivot readings must be below 35 for bullish or above 65 for bearish.
- After second-pivot confirmation, price must remain on the valid side of that pivot and the setup expires after ten bars.
Enter next bar open after price closes beyond the highest high of the five bars ending at the confirmed second low for bullish divergence; mirror below the five-bar low for bearish divergence.
Stop is 0.20 × ATR(14) beyond the second price pivot. Risk 0.50% of equity and round down to 0.01 lot.
Take profit at 2R. Exit at market after 20 completed H4 bars if neither stop nor target has traded.
Cancel if price makes a new extreme beyond the second pivot before entry, trigger does not occur in ten bars, an opposite divergence confirms first, or the next-open gap exceeds 0.5 ATR.
Use a constant 1.2-pip spread, 0.2-pip adverse slippage per fill, zero commission and 0.5 pip per rollover.
Move through the chart one decision at a time
- First pivot confirms
A low at 1.0800 with RSI 27 becomes known only after two higher lows have completed; record its timestamp and value.
- Second pivot forms
Nine bars later price reaches 1.0790 and RSI 34; no divergence decision is allowed yet.
- Two bars later: confirm
The second low confirms. With ATR at 60 pips, price is 10 pips lower, exceeding 0.10 ATR, while RSI is seven points higher.
- Freeze trigger
The highest high in the specified five-bar window is 1.0820. Stop candidate is 0.20 ATR below 1.0790, or 1.0778.
- Structural close
A later bar closes at 1.0824 without first making a lower low; enter at the next open and set the fixed 2R target.
- Resolve
Record stop, target or bar-20 exit. The divergence drawing and pivot values never move after confirmation.
A rejected example
Reject an attractive line drawn between the live low and a prior pivot before two right-hand bars exist. It is an unconfirmed candidate, not information available to the method.
Common variations
- Separate variant only: hidden divergence continuation.
- Separate variant only: RSI difference threshold of three or eight points.
- Separate variant only: return to EMA(20) instead of a 2R target.
